We often hear the phrase ‘movement is medicine’. Keeping your spine mobile while staying active helps to maintain flexibility and prevents back pain. With over 60 joints in your spine, it’s important that they function properly so the spine can keep you upright while protecting your spinal cord and nerves.
As we get older, we all suffer from wear and tear changes to our bodies, and are subject to aches and pains from time to time. But this doesn’t mean you need to stop moving – quite the opposite! Daily movement or exercise will keep your spine functioning properly may help to prevent joints from getting creaky and painful.
This World Spine Day (and beyond), make sure you #GetSpineActive. Join activities in your community (such as hiking/running groups or fitness classes), find a workout pal or start walking every day. No matter how you decide to get active, make sure you move more and sit less.
About World Spine Day
Organized by the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) on October 16 each year, World Spine Day has become a focus in raising awareness of back pain and other spinal issues. With health professionals, exercise and rehabilitation experts, public health advocates, schoolchildren and patients all taking part, World Spine Day will be celebrated on every continent. World Spine Day promotes physical activity, good posture, responsible lifting and healthy working conditions, and people around the globe are encouraged to look after their spines and stay active.
The theme of this year’s World Spine Day campaign is #GetSpineActive, which highlights the importance of spinal health and encourages people to manage back and neck pain through movement and exercise. As spine, muscle, and nervous system experts, chiropractors keep Canadians moving.
Spinal Stats
- Over 11 million Canadians suffer from at least one musculoskeletal (MSK) condition each year

Help us promote World Spine Day!
This World Spine Day, the task is simple: change your social media profile pictures (Facebook and Twitter) in support of chiropractic care. Encourage your friends and family to change their profile pictures too!
The week of October 16, the Canadian Chiropractic Association will launch a Twibbon campaign and ask you to change your profile pictures in honour of World Spine Day.
A Twibbon campaign is a website where users can support a cause, brand or organization in various ways. In a few simple clicks, you can update your Facebook* and/or Twitter profile pictures with a unique, World Spine Day frame. This shows your friends and followers that you’re an advocate for chiropractic care.
Also, the Twibbon campaign will have auto-generated messages for you to post on Twitter. Showing your support has never been easier!
*To update your profile picture on Facebook, go to the Twibbon website, download the Twibbon to your desktop or mobile device, and then upload the image to your profile picture as you normally would.
But wait a minute, there is more!
