CCA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

- Dr. C.L. Martin & Dr. B. J. McLaughlin

  • New Officers-Elect (to take office November 10, 2001): Dr. Tim St. Denis, Chairman of the Board; Dr. Mireille Duranleau, President; Dr. Greg Stuart, First Vice President; Dr. Grayden Bridge, Second Vice President; Dr. Stan Gorchynsky, Secretary Treasurer.

  • Dr. Al Holowski from Taber, Alberta and Dr. Eric Jackson from Ottawa will replace Dr. Ione Pulchalski (who resigned her position) and Dr. Pulchalski (who has been hired as the CCA insurance consultant) as CCA Governors.

  • Mr. Jim Duncan replaces Mr. Ed Barisa as Executive Director. After reviewing CCA financials, Dr. Duncan has introduced new accounting practices, which are better aligned with those used by the CCA accounting firm of McDaniel & Bushnell. These practices allow for greater financial control and more efficient tracking of expenditures.

  • In an effort to achieve a balanced budget by year-end, a number of budgetary items have been revised or deleted. The item of "Chiropractic Business" has been terminated, while "Practice Makes Perfect" and "Horizon Chiropractique" have been revised. The CCA will seek to partner these events with the CCPA, who already holds an event for graduating students. As a result of strict budget cuts, Denys Begin and Cindy McDonald have been laid off. In addition, other committee budgets and general expenditures have been substantially reduced.

  • The CCA will support the Manitoba Chiropractic Association in its lawsuit against the Manitoba College of Physicians & Surgeons (MCPS), providing $10,000.00 per year for the next four years. The MCA will also seek financial support from individual members and organizations. To date, they have received $35 thousand from ICA members and $10 thousand from the Alberta Chiropractic Association.

  • The CCPA reported that although the number of claims has been increasing, the organization remains in solid financial shape. Membership has increased by 4.6%, which represents 80% of Canadian chiropractic doctors. Dr. Ron Carter has been re-appointed as a member of the CCPA Board. The new video "Informed Consent and What to Expect on Your Visit to the Chiropractor" will be mailed to CCA members shortly.

  • After reviewing the CCA policy on endorsement of products and services, it was determined that it was not in the best interest of the CCA and its members to endorse services over which we have no direct control and which may expose our members to financial losses. As a result, we have withdrawn our endorsement of "chiroclinix". Backpack products "Airpack" and "Chiropac" did receive recognition from the CCA.

  • The CCA has approved the Association of Chiropractic College's consensus statement of Chiropractic, which Dr. Carey will bring forward to the WFC conference in May 2001, in Paris, for adoption as policy by the WFC. This statement includes a position on Chiropractic, the Chiropractic Paradigm and Subluxation.

  • As a consequence of the activities surrounding the recent inquest, it has become apparent that there is a lack of policy statements on various issues, whether pediatrics, orthopractic or the like. Therefore, the CCA will consult with its member divisions and attempt to develop statements of position for those areas that require them. These statements will then become policy of the CCA. Dr. Stan Gorchynsky has been placed in charge of coordinating this important process. A position on pediatrics was adopted at this meeting and will be forwarded to all CCA members.

  • The next CCA meeting will be held in Toronto on November 10th & 11th, 2001.
